Centre sensitises MDAs on Abia State Disability Law
Centre for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD), on Tuesday sensitised the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the Abia State Disability Law
2022.
The Executive Director, CCD, Mr David Anyaele said that the one-day programme was aimed at creating awareness about the Law for better understanding of its provisions.
He explained that it targeted at building capacity and strengthening of relevant stakeholders for proper implementation and strict compliance to the Law.
Anyaele pledged the group’s support to the government at the MDAs in ensuring implementation of the law.
He said: “I’m glad that the present administration in the state by Dr Alex Otti has made commitment in improving the the welfare of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) which it has demonstrated in barely one month of its inauguration.
“I call on every one of us to think of how we can support people with disabilities, as we continue to build their capacity in ensuring that they know their responsibilities.”
In a remark, Mrs Ifeoma Thomas, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Vulnerable Groups and Poverty Alleviation, expressed the present administration’s readiness to run a very inclusive government where vulnerable people have equal access to every relevant opportunity in the state.
She said that the governor had priotised the vulnerable groups and poverty reduction as his focal drive through the creation of employment driven by the private sector initiative.
According to her, the measure will attract numerous Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) development in the state.
Similarly, DCP Elizabeth Ifeanyi, Officer-in-Charge, Human Rights, Zone 9 Police Headquarters, Umuahia, said that police, being among the relevant stakeholders, were aware of the disability law in Abia.
She assured that the Nigeria Police Force would at every point in time partner with CCD to ensure that all relevant laws meant to protect the PWDs were enforced to the letter.
Mr Wisdom Kalu, the Chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, Abia chapter, expressed gratitude to CCD boss for his commitments in ameliorating the plight of PWDs in the state.
“Knowing that Anyaele is from this state boosts our morale and we thanked God that he found himself among us.
“He has gone another mile to organise this programme and we are saying thank you very much because the reward for for hard work is harder work,” he said.
In separate speeches, the Permanent Secretaries and Directors of various MDAs as well as the media chiefs pledged their commitments to ensuring that the disability law was implemented in the state.
Participants were sensitised on the provisions of the law that came into force in the state on Aug. 31, 2022.(NAN)
