Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has appealed to communities and non-governmental organisations to collaborate with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the implementation of its free healthcare initiative in the state.
He made the call on Thursday during the third quarter NYSC Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD), held in his Umuehim-Nvosi Community in Isialangwa South Local Government Area of the state.
Otti, represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Nwaobilor Ananaba, reaffirmed his commitment to delivering quality healthcare to the people.
He said that he was keen on delivering his campaign manifesto to all the communities and council areas, especially providing health support to the elderly and vulnerable in society.
According to him, this programme is in line with the free medical initiative that I promised my people.
He commended the state NYSC “for the good job it is doing in Abia.”
Earlier, the State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Ufuoma Dick-Iruenabere, sought the support of stakeholders for the smooth implementation of the laudable health initiative.
She said: “We would also appreciate any assistance in mobilising local resources and support from individuals, communities and general stakeholders in the area of drug and medical material donation.
“This is to enable us to sustain this programme and take it to other communities in the state.”
Dick-Iruenabere said that HIRD is a noble initiative organised by NYSC on a quartrely basis, with the aim of mobilising corps medical personnel in providing free medical services to the under-served rural communities.
“This outreach holding here at the home community of our amiable governor is our own way of felicitating him on his first 100 days in office,” the state NYSC boss said.
In a remark, the Traditional Prime Minister of Ehi-ana Uguru Ancient Kingdom (Umuehim), Chief Paulson Anyim, lauded NYSC for the initiative.
“This is the first time in my tenure to have free medical care brought to my community,” Anyim, who was visibly excited, said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at least 500 residents benefitted from the wide range of medical services, including general medical consultations, dental care, eye screening, free drugs and health talk, among others. (NAN)
