The Abia State Government says it is committed to accelerating laws that will eliminate all forms of gender-based violence against women, especially the girl child in the state.
Mrs Ngozi Felix, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, said this in Umuahia during the media engagement as part of activities to mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence(GBV).
She disclosed that this year’s event is tagged: “Unite,Invest To Prevent Violence Against Women And Girls.”
Felix said that Gov. Alex Otti-led administration would continue to ensure that the safety and rights of every woman, especially the girl child were protected.
The commissioner disclosed that the state government in collaboration with the security agencies recently rescued 21 social mothers at a home in Umumkpei community in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area.
She further advised the public to report any form of child abuse or gender based violence against women or the girl child to the ministry for prompt action.
Contributing, the state National Council for Child Rights Advocates, Mr Innocent Akomas; state Lead Gender Education and Protection Department Caritas Nig., Naomi Thompson and others, called on all to join hands in the elimination of gender-based violence.
They commended the governor for the proactive measures taken by his administration to ensure adequate protection of the rights and dignity of every woman and the girl child in the state.
The 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, which started on Nov. 25, is an annual event that is aimed at sensiitising the public on the need to eliminate all forms of gender-based violence.(NAN)
