The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Friday offered free medical services to members of Nkata-Ibeku community in Umuahia North Local Government Area, Abia.
The one-day programme was the first quarter of the scheme’s Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD).
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Ufuoma Dick-Iruenabere, said the outreach programme was the organisation’s own little way of giving back to its host communities.
She said that it is aimed at mobilising corps medical personnel, alongside medical equipment and supplies to provide free medical services to the underserved and unreached in the rural communities.
According to her, HIRD programme is conducted in collaboration with the relevant health authorities in the state, to ensure the safety and wellbeing of both corps members and beneficiaries.
She thanked all the sponsors for reaching out to the scheme by way of donation of drugs, materials and funds for hosting the free medical outreach.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NYSC provided a wide range of medical services, including general medical consultations, basic health checks, dental care, eye screenings, immunisations and health talk sessions.
A beneficiary, Mrs Roseline Nzenwa expressed gratitude to the organisers for the laudable initiative in her community.
“I’m very happy because my health status was checked by the health personnel today and they also gave me free drugs,” she said.
Some of the dignitaries at the programme were the Deputy Speaker, Abia House of Assembly, Austin Mmeregini,; a community leader, Chief Nnomele Okeiyi, Nkata family meeting executive and others.
