SCI Day : SCIAN raises spinal cord injury awareness in Abia
The Spinal Cord Injuries Association of Nigeria (SCIAN), Abia chapter, has raised an awareness and knowledge of spinal cord injury among residents in the state.
The group visited several places in Umuahia on Thursday, to inform the residents about the dangers of spinal cord injury, in celebration of this year’s International Spinal Cord Injury Day.
The SCIAN Chairman, Mr David Onuoha said that the essence was to let the people know how important it is for them to stay away from violence.
Onuoha, who enlightened the people about theq tuberculosis of the spinal cord, cautioned them against untreated cold.
According to him, untreated cold can cause serious harm to the spinal cord.
“It was strange to me when I heard it the first time, but at the end I found out that it is true.
“When what we know as common cold which affects our lungs, is left untreated for a long time, it can lead to complications that can cause injury to our spinal cord.
“It is very important that I and my colleagues raise this awareness today because it hasn’t been easy for any of us using the wheelchair.
“Speaking from experience, spinal cord injury is the worst thing you can even wish to your enemy, because you cannot do anything on your own without people’s assistance,” he said.
