The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Abia, Mr Chukwuemeka Ibeziako, has charged the INEC staff members to be committed and prepared to set higher standards on electoral processes in the state in 2027.
Ibeziako gave the charge in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia.
He spoke on the sideline of the end of the year party, organised by the INEC Staff Welfare Association (ISWA), Abia Chapter.
He advised the staff members to work hard to earn public trust and confidence which, he said, are bedrock principles for a credible electoral process.
Speaking about the expectations in the 2027 General Elections, he said: “We have to transcend the existing records.
“We are going to set the bar even higher.”
Ibiaziako, who assumed office about six months ago, urged the workers to always remember the significance of their job in national affairs.
“I expect them to double their efforts, moreso, in the acknowledgement and realisation that we have a new Chairman, who has come with a very dynamic idea,” the REC said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the REC and INEC Administrative Secretary, Chief Amah Agwu, were honoured by the association for their outstanding performances.
In a speech, the Chairman of ISWA, Mr Collins Eze, said that the occasion provided an avenue for the members to come together and celebrate, having worked very hard throughout the year.
He said that it was also a send off party for retiring INEC staff.
Eze, who gave account of his stewardship at the event, thanked the members for their support and cooperation during the four years of his leadership.
“We are up to date with the payment of honorarium to all the members that wedded, had child presentation or burial of their parents.
“As an innovative leadership, we invented various means of assisting members, who were in dire financial need as a result of failing health or other unforeseen circumstances,” he said.
Eze further said that his administration had paid honorarium to all the staff members that retired between 2023 and February 2025.
Highlights of the occasion included the presentation of cheques worth N100,000 to each of the retiring staff and inauguration of ISWA new executive, with Mr Enyinnaya Nwoko as the Chairman.
