Umuahia,(NAN) The Abia command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has pledged stronger surveillance and specialised training to improve security at Abia State University, Uturu.
The commitment followed growing efforts by security agencies to safeguard schools and critical public institutions across the country.
In a statement by Ndukwe Agu, the command spokesperson, the commandant, Chukwuemeka Odimba made the pledge during a management visit on Friday.
Odimba led senior officers of the command on what officials described as a strategic security engagement with university authorities.
Agwu said the visit formed part of the corps’ Safe School initiative and infrastructure protection mandate.
He explained that educational institutions remainy vital national assets requiring constant protection and coordinated security intervention.
During the meeting, both teams reviewed the university’s security environment and discussed emerging threats.
They also examined existing security structures and identified operational gaps requiring urgent attention.
“Universities are critical national assets, and the corps is prepared to protect students, staff, and facilities,” Odimba said.
He stressed that learning institutions deserved peaceful environments where academic activities would thrive uninterrupted.
Odimba commended the university’s internal security arrangements and the commitment of its personnel.
He said stronger partnerships would further improve operational effectiveness and campus safety.
“We are ready to work closely with management in building stronger security capacity,” he said.
Odimba promised workshops and professional training for the university’s internal security operatives.
He said the exercise would sharpen their skills in surveillance, intelligence gathering, and emergency response.
The commandant disclosed that the Counter Terrorism Team would support campus security operations.
He said the specialised unit would work closely with university personnel on threat prevention.
“This collaboration will ensure a safer environment for teaching, learning, and research,” he stated.
Odimba also highlighted reforms introduced under Commandant-General Abubakar Audi’s leadership.
He said the corps had embraced technology-driven operations and non-kinetic security approaches.
According to him, the strategy has improved operational outcomes and promoted stability in communities.
He added that many universities were already benefiting from Audi’s security engagements.
Odimba expressed hope that Abia State University would equally gain from such expertise.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, thanked the NSCDC delegation for prioritising campus safety.
He acknowledged that the area’s security situation had improved over the past eighteen months.
Okeudo credited security agencies for their sustained commitment and coordinated interventions.
“This visit marks the beginning of stronger security collaboration for our institution,” he said.
He assured the corps of the university’s readiness to support all joint security initiatives.
Okeudo also pledged cooperation in protecting government investments and safeguarding academic activities.
