(NAN) Officials of the Abia Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education on Monday monitored school resumption for the 2026/2027 academic session.
The team visited both public and private primary and secondary schools across Umuahia Zone to assess compliance and activities.
Teachers were seen in classrooms teaching pupils and students.
The team checked teachers’ attendance registers and time of resumption.
They also conducted roll calls for teachers, pupils and students.
In an interview, Dr Esther Mbuko, Director of Quality Assurance, Basic, who led the monitoring team, expressed satisfaction with what was observed.
She urged teachers to put in their best and teach with passion.
She also reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving education in the state.
Mbuko said monitoring was to confirm if students and teachers resumed and were engaged fully.
“The essence is to make sure teachers are up and doing.This makes them engage students in effective teaching and learning,” she said.
She called on students yet to resume in both public and private schools to return immediately as academic activities had started in earnest.
Mbuko listed some of the schools monitored to include Afaraukwu Technical School (Junior and Senior), Ibeku High School and Nkata Community Primary and Secondary Schools.
“At Afaraukwu Technical, students returned in large numbers and all teachers were present. Teaching and learning was ongoing in all classes,” she noted.
She added that at Ibeku High School, some classes were engaged while others were doing clean-up under teacher supervision.
Mbuko announced that monitoring would continue on Tuesday in another zone.
According to her Abia has three education zones: Aba, Umuahia and Arochukwu.
On complaints of teacher shortage, she said government had recruited a second batch of teachers.
She said the posting would address gaps in subject areas.
