Abia can become South-East tomato production hub –APC Deputy Gov. Candidate
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Deputy Governorship Candidate in Abia, Dr Godswill Egbe, says the state can become the tomato production hub of the South-East zone through household greenhouse farming.
Egbe made the assertion on Tuesday in Ovim, his community in Isuikwuato Local Government Area (LGA) during his birthday celebration.
He explained that if each household owns a tomato greenhouse, the state would produce tomatoes all through the year.
“Tomato is seasonal and expensive in the South–East because it is brought from the northern part of the country.
“The greenhouse initiative will enable households consume what they need and sell the surplus through community aggregation.
“Abia can through this initiative, supply tomatoes consistently to the entire South-East,” he said.
He described such empowerment initiave as sustainable, with growth and expansionary potentials, unlike distributing motorcycles or sewing machines.
“My experience in development finance and agro–business informed the model as true empowerment must improve livelihoods.
“I am the President-General of my community and my focus has been on youth empowerment and enhancing household economy,” he said.
Egbe pledged to support the party’s Governorship Candidate, Chief Eric Opah to succeed if elected into office, insisting that Abia deserves the best governance any state can have.
“We would work with our manifesto and shared aspirations, translating progressive ideas into practical livelihood improvement,” he said.
The APC Governorship Candidate in Abia, Chief Eric Opah congratulated Egbe on the milestone, describing their union as a divine mandate to serve Abia.
Opah also described Egbe as a seasoned technocrat, accomplished professional and a man of great character.
“Egbe’s 27 years experience in development financing, pension administration, agro-business and project management would be beneficial to the state.
“My running mate’s roles with BUA International, USAID/Connexus Corporation, African Development Bank Group and Sane-Konsult International Limited would be invaluable,” he said.
The event was graced by dignatories who include the state Party Chairman, Chief Chijioke Chukwu among others.
The event also witnessed the launch of Egbe’s political support group, the Ebube Anyanwu Initiative.
