Former federal lawmaker, Chief Sam Onuigbo, has announced his bid for the Abia Central Senatorial Seat on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 National Assembly election.
Onuigbo, who made the declaration at his residence in Obi Ibere, Ikwuano Local Government area of Abia, emphasised his decision is driven by a desire to invest his experience in the party’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He revealed that his decision was reached after consultations with family, friends, and associates.
Abia Central Senatorial Zone consists of six LGAs including Ikwuano, Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Umuahia North, Umuahia South and Osisioma.
A member of the Board of North East Development Commission, Onuigbo previously represented Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency for two terms (2015-2019; 2019-2023).
Onuigbo had contested for the same position in 2023 but lost to Stanley Nwokocha of Labour Party, a result later overturned by the judiciary in favour of Austin Akobundu of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Onuigbo who made the declaration before APC in the zone, claimed that his 18 years’ stint as a staffer of the United States Consulate in Lagos helped him to hone skills in public policy.
He said: “By declaring for the Senate contest, I wish to assure you, my people; that I will always reflect humility, integrity, honour and diligence in the work of representing you.
“I wish to restate that I will continue to run on my principle of EAR–Effectiveness, Accessibility, and Responsiveness.
“I have shown myself a good ambassador to our community, state and people by the string of excellent record of achievements in my previous assignments.
“If supported to represent our zone in the Senate, I will ensure that every ward, state constituency and local government will serve as fulcrum of representation through a seamless constituency consultation strategy.”
Onuigb, a recognised climate leader who sponsored Nigeria’s landmark Climate Change Act of 2021, listed some of his achievements while in the House of Representatives.
He insisted that his intention was not for selfish aggrandisement, but to bring honour and accomplished representation to the people.
