Nigerian Army opens inter-brigade competition in Abia

The 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army, will host the 82 Division Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition 2026 from April 20 to 24, 2026, at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, Ohafia, Abia.
This is contained in a statement issued by Capt. Muyiwa Ayara, for the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade, Capt. Mazinho Attah.
He stated that the opening ceremony holds on Monday, April 20, while the closing ceremony and presentation of medals, trophies, and awards to outstanding participants and formations will take place on Friday, April 24, 2026.
He further stated that five teams drawn from formations under 82 Division will compete, namely : 13 Brigade (Cross River); host 14 Brigade (Abia); 34 Artillery Brigade (covering Imo and Anambra States).
Others are 82 Division Garrison (Enugu State) and a combined team of 44 Engineer and 54 Signal Brigades from Enugu State, including the Women Battalion from Ebonyi .
He stated that the the five-day event is a strategic capacity-building initiative designed to enhance leadership skills, organisational efficiency, and professional competence among Corporals and soldiers below that rank.
“It serves as a critical platform for preparing junior personnel for higher responsibilities within the Nigerian Army, while reinforcing discipline, operational effectiveness, and esprit de corps,” the statement added.
He said that participants will be tested across core military competencies including weapon handling, drill, physical fitness, map reading, field craft, and tactics.
According to the statement, the drills are aimed at sharpening operational skills, boosting morale, fostering teamwork, and encouraging healthy competition among units to strengthen the Army’s overall readiness.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to excellence, professionalism, and the continuous development of its personnel in line with global best practices,” the statement added.
