Umuahia, July 28, 2026 (NAN) The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abia Command, on Tuesday began a five-day capacity-building workshop on technology-driven security for its personnel.
The workshop is designed to equip officers with skills in drone deployment, wireless communication, AI-driven monitoring, digital evidence handling, threat assessment and intelligence-led policing.
The Commandant-General of NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, described the workshop as a demonstration of the corps’ commitment to professional growth and operational excellence.
Audi, represented by the Zonal Commander, Zone 5, Dr Ahmed Gandi, said modern security threats had become increasingly complex, making continuous learning imperative.
He said the programme would equip personnel with updated knowledge, practical skills and deeper insight into modern security practices.
According to him, effectiveness in security operations was measured not only by force but also by intelligence, teamwork and appropriate response.
Audi said the corps was aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda by building interoperable systems for command and control, digital incident reporting, evidence management and drone operations.
He commended the state government for its support and urged participants to transfer the knowledge gained to officers in their respective divisions.
Gov. Alex Otti, represented by his Special Adviser on Security Matters, Mr MacDonald Ubah, commended the corps for its expanded role in supporting security operations in the state.
Otti said collaboration among security agencies had made Abia the safest state in the country.
He said security remained critical to development and assured residents that no part of the state would be left in the hands of criminals.
He urged participants to treat the workshop as a train-the-trainer programme by passing the knowledge to other personnel.
Earlier, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Chukwuemeka Odimba, said criminals were increasingly exploiting emerging technologies.
Odimba said security personnel must remain proactive and technologically equipped to counter evolving threats.
He said the competencies being taught had become indispensable requirements for every modern security organisation.
Odimba thanked the governor and the commandant-general for approving the workshop.
He assured that the knowledge acquired would improve service delivery and strengthen the command’s operational effectiveness.
He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, critical national assets and supporting internal security.
Also speaking, the Abia Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Dr Leonard Nnadim, urged officers to embrace professionalism and technology in safeguarding communities.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Uzor Nwachukwu, described security work as a calling rather than merely a career.
Nwachukwu urged the personnel to serve with integrity and the fear of God.
